Old-fashioned cocktails are making a comeback. And there’s no better cocktail for late-Summer sipping than a classic Gold Rush.
Ingredients.
- 1 part Bourbon (roughly 4.5 ounces)
- 1 part fresh-squeezed lemon juice
- 3 spoonfuls Honey
This is basically a 1:1 cocktail.
For the first half, squeeze one large (room-temperature) lemon into an old-fashioned glass, then stir in 3 spoonfuls of honey until everything’s completely dissolved.
Next, note the volume that your lemon-honey base takes up in the glass and double it with bourbon. Then top off with ice and — just like the name suggests — you’re golden.
Note: Some recipes call for warm water to help dissolve the honey, but no sense drowning perfectly good bourbon, I say. After all, the ice’ll get to that soon enough. And if you don’t already have a favorite bourbon, I recommend Basil Hayden’s.
Granted, cocktails may be a little harder to justify than kale, but I figure the key to healthy living is still knowing how to live.
Besides, lemon, honey, and whiskey — serve it warm and this is basically the same old-timey Hot Toddy remedy your grandmother would’ve given when you had a cold. And would grandma lead you astray? Exactly.
Happy sipping.
